1970 Dodge Dart fitted with a 318ci 5.2 litre V8 with a 4 speed manual gearbox. £7500 ono

It's in very good condition and has mot till March 2012 and is taxed(free tax) till end of February 2012 but I will have to SORN in next few days as insurance is expiring.

It was first registered in the UK in March last year...it came over from Mexico. Great solid car,NOT a rust bucket!

Drives well for a 41 year old muscle car...great stance,good body,just some very minor bubbling in paint in a few isolated areas as shown in the last two pictures. Interior is very good apart from the front bench seat needs re-trimming and ideally could do with a new headlining.

Car is advertised elsewhere so I reserve the right to remove listing.

I like this era of 70’s road film like Vanishing Point, there is a bleakness and sense of void that seemed to capture the mood of the times, the end of the 60’s and economic and political change. The film seemed to sense (correctly in my opinion) the end of a Golden Age.

If you look at the history of the American Auto industry, Until the 70s auto makers had been largely unregulated. For the previous 20 years the Big Three (Chevrolet, Ford and Chrysler) had built up their wealth out the baby boomers, a tidal ways of teenagers all coming of age at the same time as a result of Post WWII prosperity.

The hot-rodder’s represented reckless youth, Rock n roll was in they heyday and it must have been a great time to be a teenager. The Auto Makers fell over themselves to supply demand. As a result in my personal opinion was the Golden Age of Car Design. Forget handling, efficacy and safety. It was all about candy. Cool looking and Big engine horsepower the Muscle Car Era. Some of these cars engines where over 7 litres and produced over 500 horsepower and did about 9 mpg.

Another problem was high death tolls from accidents as people learnt, youth and sports car are a lethal combination.By the late 60s the ear of big government had also begun. They stated to regulate the issue placing restrictions on the cars. The Big Three fought back, by actually lying about the power of the engines putting much more power in them than specified.

By 1974 it was all over. The government, insurance companies and the 70s oil crisis out priced the cars as more efficient Japanese cars became a necessary option for most.For me the interesting bit is the when you look at all the factors (Gas guzzling inefficient and dangerous) that in today’s society it is perhaps obvious on the opinion that the government was right to step in and the Auto Makers where bad for making such polluting vehicles.

I agree as a way for the masses to move around, its best to pollute as little as possible.However I think something very special was lost with that era. The age of reckless youth, freedom and rebelling against the system was now under attack. Politically the promise of prosperity was over.

What I think these films capture is the dying age of freedom when the word soul was used in popular culture as if it was something of value. I remember being a teenager in the Grunge era when I developed the desire to travel. I remember how hideous the future looked when faced with the prospects of not leaving my home town and employment. Wild horses could stop me from leaving for the adventure. My values then where adolescently strong, and I remember the word “soul” in the music and books. I remember Kerouac, The Doors, Pink Floyd the most. Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedders intensity, he showed our generations youthful pain and honesty.

So to ask myself truly if I think the death of the gas guzzling inefficient and dangerous cars of the time is a good thing? Well for the environment yeh for sure. But for the soul? Well if it was a simple choice between

a society of recklessness that values freedom and the soul? Or the Age that succeeded it?

Well perhaps now in our Post Consumption Age of Hopelessness (well for 99% of us). We can take the opportunity to revaluate what’s truly important to us. In terms of a muscle car, please don’t be put off by the name or perhaps take the obvious opinion that such a vehicle was the devils work and as revenge from the environment should be wiped off the planet. Because if you do, please just do one thing if you can. Take a drive in one, and just step back in time when things where designed with style and fun for a reckless generation. You never know, you just might even find your soul.

On last thing if you are ever luck enough to see a hot rod or muscle car driving down the road, give them a thumbs up for flying the flag for that old concept freedom.

This will make a great light winter project. Currently classed as a rolling restoration, with lots of work done. Fully on the road, with MOT and TAXED (exempt) till DEC. Its had two new quarter panels and been cleared of rust.

Currently MAT Black Body good for Drag car or looking mean on the road. Its free from rust, but need bodywork and paint finishing for show etc. Got full interior (currently not installed). Needs back windscreen and engine overhaul (got valve stem seals ready). Needs Prop shaft UJ replacing and your good to go.
